calendar of seasonal events you won't want to miss

pittsburg area day on the hill | January | The purpose of this annual event is to provide an opportunity for our four area communities (Arma, Cherokee, Frontenac, and Pittsburg) to visit with legislators from across Kansas in their working environment in our continuing commitment to play an active role in the decision-making process. While the needs of all communities in Southeast Kansas are diverse and somewhat unique, it is by working together to recognize those needs that we are able to optimize economic potential, thereby ensuring a better quality of life both locally and regionally, as well as statewide. Southeast Kansas' fried chicken traditionally is served to approximately 400 State House employees, creating a true awareness of our presence.

southeast kansas day on the hill | February | Thirteen counties and organizations collaboratively organize this annual trip to our state capital in an effort to promote our region in a united front. We continuously assess the characteristics of our region to identify traits that serve as either a threat or a future opportunity. Through this process, we are committed to communicating our views with state leaders and to being a part of the decision-making process which shape the lives of our residents. Position statements provided this past year include: Economic Development, Transportation, Workforce Development, Workers Compensation and Unemployment Compensation, Tourism, and both Pre-K through 12 and Post Secondary Education.

legislative delegation hearings | March | The hearings are jointly sponsored by the City of Pittsburg and the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce annually. The purpose of the meeting is to give groups or individuals in Crawford County the opportunity to present their legislative priorities for the upcoming Legislative session. It also allows our community to learn more about the diverse issues affecting groups, organizations, and individuals functioning in our area. This is not a forum for legislators to answer questions, but rather the opportunity for input from the public to update our elected officials regarding topics important to us. This annual event is broadcast live for those unable to attend.
